This will make 1 large deep dish or 2 small pies....
You can use Grandma Kuhn's pie crust recipe or just buy two frozen pie crusts.
Mom and I perfected this recipe over time. I used to make it alot when the girls were young.
Mix together in a bowl
2 c. flour
1 cup brown sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves
Combine dry ingredients then work in 1/2 c. shortening or butter to make it into a crumbly mixture. We decided we preferred the butter.
In another small container mix
1/2 c. molasses (baking)
1/2 c. hot water
1/2 teas. baking soda (rounded)
Pour last mixture in pie crust first, making sure if frozen pie crust, they are thawed. Then sprinkle the dry ingredients over top.
Bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes, and then 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Depending on your oven, check it towards the end to make sure it isn't getting too overcooked. Love this recipe!
Important note: Reduce the amount of flour for the topping to 1 and 1/2 cups instead of 2 cups. Be sure and use the full amount of each spice required and you can use extra butter if necessary when making the crumb topping. Michelle made the pie yesterday and we decided to include these notes. I worked off of two different recipes to combine into one, so this should come out fine with these corrections.
